FULANI is an International designer extremely passionate about what she does. Amazingly she has gained more recognition from the international market than in Nigeria. Despite having passion for two things, designing too over the other. Enjoy the interview with EM’S DAMILOLA SHOTE.
My journey began a long time ago, right after school. I always wanted to be a fashion designer and a singer. I was really stubborn about it so my mother let me do both schools (music and fashion) at the same time.
And that was how my journey began. I started to travel to the States, basically “jumped into the cold water” and almost drowned a dozen times but managed to learn quick and navigated myself through this industry jungle…
—-WHATS YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE?
Less is more: always wearable, comfortable and yet sexy.
Opposites attract: Instead of using a lightweight fabric for an evening dress, i used a floral printed, heavy faux-leather material.
—-WHATS BEEN YOUR BEST MOMENTS AS A DESIGNER?
My best moments: when I freshly started my business and nobody knew me in the industry. I was surprised how quick international celebrities acknowledged my brand. They supported Fulani by wearing and buying my creations without asking questions!
—-WHATS BEEN YOUR WORST MOMENTS AS A DESIGNER?
My worst moments: When I attended for the first time, an international design exhibition in Las Vegas. I was so sure that I will sell out, expected tons of orders and attention from stylists.
Unfortunately none of the above happened I didn’t sell 1 piece. I had spent all my money and that of my grandfather who supported me financially and returned home empty handed.
—-ON A SCALE OF 1-10, WHATS BEEN YOUR RESPONSE FROM CUSTOMER SATISFACTION?
(10 is the highest)
Quality of production and finishing: 10
Fit and comfort: 10
Wash-and-wear: 8 (a lot of my pieces can’t be washed and need to be dry cleaned only)
Alterations: 10
—-WHICH CELEBRITIES HAVE WORN YOUR BRANDS?
Michelle Williams
Candace Bushnell
Agbani Darego
Lil Mama
Seyi Shay
Adelaide Kane
2face
Kim Porter
Davido
just to name a few…
—-HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORK WITH PLEASURE?
I love what I do, work is pleasure. I wouldn’t be balanced without Fulani. And I am really blessed with my family and loved ones.
