The Power of Acting As If

There’s a simple idea that should influence your behavior and decisions: act as if. Act as if you’re already the person you want to become.

The phrase “fake it till you make it” might be considered shallow advice; a catchy slogan that encourages people to pretend their way through life. But underneath the cliché is a powerful idea: sometimes, acting as if you’re already that person can help you become who you want to be.

Where the idea comes from

Part of the psychology behind this approach can be found in a concept known as behavioural activation. Originally developed as a treatment for depression, behavioural activation focuses on taking meaningful action rather than waiting for the right feelings to arrive first.

Many of us assume that motivation comes before action. We imagine we’ll start exercising when we feel motivated, speak up when we feel confident, or pursue a new goal when we feel ready. Behavioural activation turns that assumption on its head. The idea is that action can create the feelings we’re waiting for.

Basically, your actions don’t just follow your feelings. Your feelings often follow your actions. Smile and your mood lifts a little. Stand tall and your confidence ticks up. Take one step toward a goal and the goal becomes more achievable.

In other words, you don’t always need to feel like a confident person before doing something confident. Sometimes, the confidence develops because you did the thing.

This principle extends far beyond mental health. It’s reflected in the way people build habits, develop skills, and live their lives. Someone who wants to become a writer writes. Someone who wants to become healthier makes choices that support their wellbeing. Someone who wants to become a leader starts taking responsibility, contributing ideas, and making decisions.

Human beings learn through repetition. The actions we take each day gradually shape our sense of identity. When you consistently behave in a certain way, you begin to see yourself differently. The same choices made over and over can transform how you think, work, and act.

This mindset can be particularly powerful during periods of transition. Many women spend years waiting for the perfect moment to pursue a goal, change careers, start a business, or take on a leadership role. The problem is that the “right” moment never comes. You have to make now the perfect moment.

Think of the professional who contributes her ideas in a meeting despite feeling nervous. Think of the entrepreneur who launches a project while still learning along the way. Think of the woman who starts setting boundaries after years of putting everyone else first. None of these decisions require complete confidence. They require courage and a strong willingness to act in a certain way.

There is, of course, a balance to be found. No matter how you act, you should always be honest and self aware. You can only grow when your ambition is paired with effort, learning, and accountability.

Many of the people we admire started exactly where everyone else starts: uncertain, inexperienced, and full of questions. Their success wasn’t built on endless confidence. It was built on a series of decisions that eventually paid off.

The future version of yourself doesn’t just happen on day. She’s shaped by what you choose to do today. Every time you act as if you’re capable, deserving, prepared to learn, or ready to grow, you strengthen those qualities within yourself.

So if there’s something you’ve been postponing until confidence arrives, consider taking the first step now. Speak as if your voice matters. Walk into the room as if you belong there. Pursue your goal as if success is possible.

At some point, what began as acting will simply become who you are.
