Although Margot Robbie might have started off as the costar to actors like Leonardo DiCaprio and Will Smith, the Australian actress has become a leading lady in her own right. After bursting onto the acting scene in films like About Time and The Wolf of Wall Street, the gorgeous actress has been buzzed about a lot for both her high-profile role as Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad and her personal life — and she’s garnering even more attention thanks to the handful of award nominations she’s received after playing figure skater Tonya Harding in I, Tonya. Here’s your chance to get to know the star as she completely takes over Hollywood (and you fall madly in love with her).
WHO IS SHE, AND WHERE DID SHE COME FROM?
Margot was born in Australia on July 2, 1990, making her just 27 years old. She was raised on her grandparents’ farm on the Gold Coast, but later moved to Melbourne. She graduated from Somerset College in 2007. She’s been acting since she was 17, when she starred in the Australian films I.C.U. and Vigilante.
Margot made the move to Hollywood after declaring in 2009 that she had “big, big dreams for the future” and wanted “to go to LA and be a massive actor.”
WHY HAVE I BEEN HEARING SO MUCH ABOUT HER THE LAST FEW YEARS?
After starring in Australia’s most popular soap opera, Neighbours, Margot made her American TV debut on the short lived series Pan Am in 2011. She starred opposite Christina Ricci, whom she actually lived with during filming.
Margot nabbed the leading lady role in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street in 2013, playing Leonardo DiCaprio’s wife, Naomi. She beat out the likes of Kristen Stewart and Jessica Biel for the part.
Once she wrapped work on The Wolf of Wall Street, Margot scored the lead in the crime drama Focus alongside Will Smith, and made headlines when racy pictures of her and Will in a photobooth on set were released. Margot denied cheating allegations tweeting, “There’s absolutely no truth to the ridiculous rumor. It’s disappointing that goofing around on set could be taken so out of context.”
Although she was linked to both of her high-profile male costars, Will Smith and Leonardo DiCaprio, Margot started dating British director Tom Ackerley in June 2014, and they tied the knot in December 2016.
IS SHE GOING TO DISAPPEAR ANYTIME SOON?
Prepare yourself for a Margot onslaught, because the Australian actress is about to dominate the next few years, too. She played the Jane to Alexander Skarsgard’s Tarzan in 2016’s The Legend of Tarzan, where she revealed the pair shared an extremely rough sex scene.
Although The Legend of Tarzan certainly had people excited, her most buzz worthy casting to date was her role as Harley Quinn in the comic book antihero flick Suicide Squad.
In 2017, Margot was nominated for a Critics’ Choice award, Golden Globe, and SAG award for her role as Tonya Harding in the dark comedy I, Tonya. She’s also starring as Queen Elizabeth I in Mary Queen of Scots, coming out in 2018.
