My name is Iloaba Chidera I’m a fashion designer and I own the fashion brand Dera Grey Designs.
HOW AND WHEN DID YOUR JOURNEY BEGIN?
As a child, I used to hang around tailor shops so I could pick up scraps to use to make clothes for my dolls with needle and thread
After secondary school, I convinced my mum to let me learn from a local tailor. I learnt the basics. And started making dresses cheap for people around me. Since then it’s been a journey
WHAT’S YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE?
I like glam dresses, I like crystals and beads… the shinier the better
WHO ARE YOU IDEAL TARGET AUDIENCE
My ideal target audience is women. My brand is all about making you feel good about yourself and what you have on. It’s delicately tailored to suit whatever body type you have.
WHAT’S BEEN YOUR BEST MOMENTS AS A DESIGNER?
It’s been a process so I cannot single-handedly pinpoint a particular moment that was so good… just know whatever I’m doing /going through every time I see pictures or posts a client tags me in and they look so good. I scream!
WHAT’S BEEN YOUR WORST MOMENTS AS A DESIGNER?
My worst moment would be making a dress and an accident happens sort of last minute and you have to start afresh.
ON A SCALE OF 1-10, WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR RESPONSE FROM CUSTOMER SATISFACTION?
Ngl. I’ve been on a roll so far considering most of my clients can’t come in for fittings cause they’re not in Nigeria… there have been no complaints and it has been a perfect fit so far.
WHAT MAKES YOUR BRAND DIFFERENT FROM OTHERS?
Different… tbh I’m not sure. There are like 100 brands that do what I do the most important thing is I’m very good at and I care about what I do .. the sky is big enough for all of us to coexist and thankfully I’m usually fully booked months ahead.
KINDLY SHARE TIPS TO STAYING SUCCESSFUL IN THIS BUSINESS.
To be honest till now I’m not sure how I got to this point.. all I can say is I love to do something and God is sorting it out for me and all my sleepless nights are not in vain.
WHAT ADVICE WILL YOU GIVE TO START-UPS WHO HAVE A SIMILAR VISION AS YOU DO?
When you start up. It’s going to be tough and financially it won’t be worth the stress but It’s going to get better. Just keep improving on your skills and have friends who are fashion designers.
