The 62nd Annual Grammy Awards took place on Sunday the 26th of January 2020, at the staples centre in Los Angeles. The award night started off with tributes to one of the greatest basketball legends of all time Kobe Bryant. News of his death had just been announced while the Grammys had kicked off.
Most of the award recipients dedicated their awards to Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gigi who also died in the jet crash. On the Grammy’s red carpet, it was a bittersweet experience for the celebrities who pull all the stops and came in noteworthy outfits. While being interviewed they all expressed their shock as to the news of Kobe’s death and they sent their love to his family and the families of all those who died in the crash.
Our very own Burna Boy was also at the grammy’s as his album had been nominated for album of the year. Nigerians and all of Burna Boy’s fans far and wide were rooting for him to win. Unfortunately, Angelique Kidjo who was also nominated in the same category won the award for the fourth time.
In her acceptance speech, Angelique dedicated the award to Burna Boy. She spoke of how the younger generation of African artists is going to change the narrative. Although a lot of Burna’s fans are unhappy, they are glad that it was a win for the African continent.
Newcomer Billie Eilish won big at this year’s Grammy awards. The 18-year-old was named Best New Artist and also walked away with Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album.
Despite the heavy and intense atmosphere created by the loss of lives in the jet crash, the awards was definitely a night of music, love, laughter, and fashion statements.
