2) How did you learn how to design?
LoL. Good question! I had a passion for fashion and that was it. I didn’t go to Fashion school did was to intern under a fashion designer who was a stylist and a designer also and that’s how I learnt accompanied with my God given talent.
3) When did you first realize you wanted to pursue a career as a clothing designer?
Well that was during my career as a model.
4) If you weren’t a designer, what career path would you have chosen?
Not sure because apart from being a Fashion designer I dabbled as a writer, Stylist and worked in fashion production but above all I love what I do and I will choose it over and over again.
5) How did you come up with the name RICKDUSI?
I get that all the time lol…. It’s actually a coined from my surname (Eidusi) and middle name (Patrick).
6) Why Men’s Clothing?
There was some toxic masculinity few years ago towards mens’ clothing and mens appearance especially when you wear maybe a colourful suit or clothing. I am of the opinion that any one should feel confident under their own skin and appearance. Trying to change that narration brought about designing for men.
7) Did you have any fears while starting your clothing line and how did you face them?
Of course as a human being i had some doubts and fears but I didn’t let that overcome how passionate I was in wanting to build RICKDUSI. Fashion is not for the lethargic or cavalier. Against all odds I stayed focused and kept on building, believing and networking.
8) How has men’s clothing evolved over the years?
This can be seen by the way men are dressing now. Exploring colors , suits, fits , shapes . it wasn’t like this in any way few years ago. And also there are so many brands out there having conversations about who we are as people which shows progression in Nigeria as a developing country. The world is beginning to look at African Fashion and that’s a great plus.
9) What is the most challenging thing about being a designer?
The Fashion industry is still developing in Nigeria .We still lack the technology and proper fashion schools. We don’t have lots of things that people have when they are producing in countries like china and turkey for instance. And also insufficient funding is also major issue.
10) Where do you draw your inspirations from?
I find inspiration from my space. In the world around me, from travelling and the lack of proper governance in Nigeria in terms of politics. Which is why I think that it’s important we use art as a tool for social change.
11) How do you want women to feel while wearing a design by “Rick Dusi”.
In respective of every body size and shape i want every woman to feel comfortable and chick while wearing RICK DUSI. Because every piece of clothing at RICK DUSI is designed with a purpose.
12) Do you follow trends much as a person and designer?
As a person I follow trends because it keeps me up to date. As a designer I do not follow trends because my inspiration per time helps with my designing process.
13) How would you define your style?
Very minimal with a bit of an edge.
14) What does fashion means to you?
Fashion is Art. It has do with my ideas, lifestyle- the way I live and dress. I will end with the words of Coco channel “Fashion fades only style remains”.
