Who is a Mixologist?
Mixology is a term used to describe the art of mixing cocktail drink recipes. A mixologist is a person who mixes and invents cocktail drinks.
How did you start?
I started in 2009, I had just returned from completing a Masters degree programme (LLM – International Business Law) at Queen Mary University of London. I got a job but the Company had to downsize. It was difficult getting another job and I detest being idle. At that point I decided to do what I like.
How long have you been in the business?
I have been in the business for 5 years.
What training or skill set do you need ?
I have a Beginners degree from BasBartending School UK and a Master Bartenders Degree from Shaker Bar School UK.I also have a WSET (Wine and Spirit Education Trust )Award in Spirits.
Is being a woman in the business a curse or blessing?
It’s a blessing I don’t think anything can be a curse it just depends on how resilient you are as an individual.
Do you face any challenges, and what are they?
The most challenging issue in this business is manpower. It’s hard to find dedicated staff who share your vision.
What are the Career highs of the profession?
There are various opportunities in the industry. It just depends on your level of training and professionalism. It’s not like a bank job where you can become the MD. In this profession your career highs is a personal objective. It is not cast in stone.
What is the downside of being a mixologist?
I don’t think there is a downside per se. However I think we have to bring the cocktail culture to the consciousness of Nigerians. It’s a growing industry and most people don’t understand the hardwork that goes into it. This is why we are organizing the “Lagos Cocktail Week” an Eventi Cocktails initiative.
How do you keep being on top of the game?
The secret of men are in their stories. I pray a lot and I always push myself to do better.
What edge do you have over your competitors?
I have colleagues in the industry and not competitors. The most important thing for me is to keep improving and being more innovative.
What is your best selling cocktail?
I have different clients with different preferences. However from experience they love rum based cocktails.
What words do you live by?
I can do All things through Christ who strengthens me.
