We see people every day and ask “how are you?” as a regular compliment, truly, as easy as those three words sound, it’s deeper than that. Lately there has been a lot of news, gossip and stories revolving around “depression”.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIH) , ”Depression (major depressive disorder or clinical depression) is a common but serious mood disorder. It causes severe symptoms that affect how you feel, think, and handle daily activities, such as sleeping, eating, or working”
If we take a good look at the economic, environmental, financial situation of the nation, it is gives a valid reason to affect one emotionally and psychologically. Depression does not happen in a day, it is a consistent growth of a negative mood that has built up from certain situations and circumstances that the person has found him or herself.
The rate at which suicide has been the talk of the town is quite alarming and most of the attempts have come from older people after the Doctor’s story trended. There are many factors causing depression but urgent care is needed when crisis as such happens. I would suggest a few steps to take when one notices a constant change of mood but the priority is OPENNESS. An affected party must try as much as possible to speak with a trusted person, visit a psychologist or counsellor that can help you find balance.
Here are a few things that can help:
• Never stay alone in isolation. This can lead to so many things, such times are the riskiest because so many thoughts cross your mind and ways to execute them comes to play.
• Music is life. It takes you to another realm where you find comfort in your own world and peace. It is best to listen to the kinds of music that goes in line with your belief. It could be Christian, circular, hip-hop but it is best to listen to what will lift your soul and motivate or inspire you not to give up
• Mingle. Many people in depression begin to isolate themselves once the problems lingering on their mind starts coming in and I feel it is worse for someone with an introverted nature. Try to always grip yourself with people that will make you laugh. I know eventually Night will come which may give you opportunity of being alone but never take that risk.
It is important that we guard our conversations with people because if they do not share their problems, one cannot deduce what is eating them up. Our speeches go a long way; a word can heal or break a soul. It is important to be mindful of that, and more importantly always extend a hand of love. It may be that symbol of love that can begin the healing process of a depressed person opening up.
Giving up is no option because things can only get better when one fights to survive against all odds.
