The NAACP Image Award is an annual award ceremony presented by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), based in the United States, to honour outstanding performances in film, television, music and literature. This year was the 51st edition and a major celebration of Black Royalty at the NAACP Awards.
As with other ceremonies, such as the Oscars and the Grammys, the members of the awarding body (in this case NAACP members) vote on the over 40 categories of the Image Ceremonies.
This year some of the biggest winners include “Black-ish” TV Series which won 4 awards for Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Actor in a comedy series (won by Anthony Anderson), Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series (won by Deon Cole), Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series (won by Marsai Martin).
Warner Bros pictures heartwarming and tear-jerking movie “Just Mercy” also bagged 3 awards. The awards include Outstanding Motion Picture, Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture (Michael B. Jordan), Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture (Jamie Foxx).
Fifteen-year-old Black-ish break out star Marsai Martin won big at the NAACP, her wins include Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture and Outstanding Breakthrough Performance in a Motion Picture for her role in the 2019 film “Little,” and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Performance by a Youth for ABC’s “Black-ish.
Rihanna received a special honour at the NAACP. She was given the President’s Award, which recognizes special achievements and distinguished public service. The grammy award winner received this recognition for her achievements as a public servant and her work as an activist and philanthropist, which include the Clara Lionel Foundation, a nonprofit organization she founded in 2012 that “supports and funds groundbreaking education and emergency response programs around the world.”
