In the past year, we’ve seen a significant rise in the number of people boldly speaking up and taking a stance against domestic violence. On Sunday, September 16th, 2018, survivors, advocates, and supporters will celebrate another huge win for the cause as the Domestic Violence Assistance Line Initiative (DVALI) officially launches.
DVALI is an organization which aims to strengthen the fight against domestic violence by providing an avenue for victims to share their experiences and get the help they need. The assistance lines will be manned by survivors of domestic violence, as well as trained personnel and volunteers, who will help callers navigate their pain and angst. The core belief of the initiative is that talking helps and is the first major step needed in order to claim one’s life back. Every call DVALI receives will be confidential, and no information will be shared with the public or anyone outside the organization.
This initiative was founded by Ms. Joyce Okungbowa, who having survived domestic violence, was inspired to create DVALI so no victim will feel as isolated as she felt, and to encourage more people to share their stories.
According to Ms. Joyce Okungbowa, “If Domestic Violence affects you or anyone within your circle, reach out today, as it could be a matter of life and death, which it often is – And please always remember … talking helps”
The Domestic Violence Assistance Lines Initiative will officially launch at the Lilygate Hotel, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos. At the launch event, which is only open to women, Ms. Okungbowa and Pastor Ituah Ighodalo (Senior Pastor at Trinity House) will be speaking with those present about dealing with Domestic Abuse. Mrs. Nkiru Olumide-Ojo, Founder of The Lighthouse Network, will host the event. Attendance is free, and women interested in attending can send an email to contact@dvali.ng
