November 9th will be remembered as the day when women in Nigeria from different professions and walks of life gathered to witness the Unveiling of a women’s magazine to celebrate women in their careers and businesses and support those who aspire to start the process. The theme of the day centered around “Character” as a currency of trade greater than the dollar. The Essential Woman Magazine launch was more than merely a launch but a wake up call for women to come up higher in their roles in the family unit and the society at large. In her opening speech, Mrs Ekua Abudu (Editor of Essential Woman) enjoined women to imbibe the principles of character and integrity as they aspire to reach their various goals in a morally corrupt society.

The event witnessed key speeches from notable speakers – Dr. (Mrs.) Obiageli (Oby) Ezekwesili (Nigeria’s former Minister of Education and Co-Convener of the Bring Back Our Girls campaign) and Dr. Ndidi Nwuneli (Founder of LEAP Africa and Co-Founder of AACE Food Processing & Distribution) – who both stressed the essential role of character in nation building and in shaping the next generation. According to Dr. Ezekwesili, Nigeria can only realistically progress as a country and change its state of governance if its leaders have a combination of values and competence. In her speech Dr. Nwuneli implored women to ensure they leave a legacy of exemplary character to the next generation. She charged them to match their talk with their walk and actions in order to see the change we all desire.
