“So little of who I am happened in those eight years,” former First Lady Michelle Obama says, referring to Barack Obama’s two terms as President of the United States. “So much more of who I was happened before.” Enter Becoming, the new Netflix documentary that explores who Obama was before entering the White House and her blockbuster book tour that followed.
The first trailer for the documentary, which debuts on Netflix this Wednesday, May 6, is set to Alicia Keys’ “Girl on Fire” and fits the empowering spirit of the documentary. Obama tracks her life from a childhood in the working-class South Side of Chicago to her time as First Lady, where she became one of the most inspiring political voices of our time.
But the Nadia Hallgren-directed film shifts focus from Obama’s story to a larger call for equality and action. “There are millions of Michelle and Barack Obamas all over the world,” Obama insists. The film is somewhat of a companion to Obama’s 2018 memoir of the same name, which became the best-selling book that year. Still, she promises in the trailer that this is her: “unplugged, for the first time” and offering unprecedented access to her life and work.
