TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR BRAND
My name is Adetoke Oluwo, I am a Tv producer screenwriter and the creative director of Sgtcclothing. I started in Lagos as a fashion Tv presenter, and producer covering international Fashion shows like London Fashion Week, New York Fashion Week and major Fashion Events in Lagos before the business of Fashion found me on Instagram.
Now I am the Creative Director of the well-known Ankara ready-to-wear Fashion Brand, @sgtcclothing I also train entrepreneurs using my experience to guide others.
HOW AND WHEN DID YOUR JOURNEY BEGIN?
My journey began on Instagram. I posted a random picture of me wearing Ankara on Instagram, the picture caught the eyes of an ankara ready-to-wear businesswoman in London.
Coincidentally I was going to the London Fashion Week. We met up, she became my wholesaler and the business kickstarted from there.
The business started in November same year officially, by December same year, My Brand, @sgtcclothing was viral on social media.
WHAT’S YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE?
Uber stylish and unique Afrocentric pieces.
WHO ARE YOUR IDEAL TARGET AUDIENCE?
Fashion Forward/stylish women who are not afraid of standing out.
WHAT’S BEEN YOUR BEST MOMENTS AS A DESIGNER?
I would say anytime I see a creator home and abroad style my piece in their unique way. It excites me in a special way. Very humbling.
WHAT’S BEEN YOUR WORST MOMENTS AS A DESIGNER?
Haha! Having people copy my bestsellers. They wouldn’t even allow you to make small money and enjoy small. Once major blogs post the looks, you’d wake up to like 20 different colours everywhere!
ON A SCALE OF 1-10, WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR RESPONSE FROM CUSTOMER SATISFACTION?
I would say 9. I really haven’t had major complaints concerning my designs and I know it’s hard to believe but that’s the truth.
WHAT MAKES YOUR BRAND DIFFERENT FROM OTHERS?
I think the versatility of my pieces. And the vibrancy of our prints and lastly, our back-to-back content
KINDLY SHARE TIPS TO STAYING SUCCESSFUL IN THIS BUSINESS
Always stay hungry and never think you’ve arrived. You can learn from anywhere and anyone.
WHAT ADVICE WILL YOU GIVE TO START-UPS WHO HAVE SIMILAR VISION AS YOU DO?
Work on your self-esteem and self-confidence, you will need it. That’s the first step to you standing the test of time on these brutal streets. Again, carve out a niche for yourself and stay consistent.
