TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND BRAND

My name is Onyinye Chinwendu. I am a talented and experienced fashion designer based in Lagos with a remarkable 10 years of expertise in the industry. My work is characterized by creating stunning clothing pieces that bring joy to my clients. My passion for design shines through in every piece I create, reflecting my happiness and desire to share that joy with those who wear my designs. My business is a hub of creativity and satisfaction, where I transform my clients’ fashion dreams into beautiful and unique clothing.

HOW AND WHEN DID YOUR JOURNEY BEGIN?

In the spring of 2011, my personal journey in tailoring began out of sheer necessity and being insatiable…My family tailor, despite her best efforts, could never quite capture the essence of my fashion visions. Frustration led me to her store, where I spent countless hours offering assistance and keen observations as she navigated through adjustments. It was during one of these moments that a serendipitous opportunity arose.

One day, my family tailor recognized my insatiable appetite for the art of tailoring and suggested that I embark on a journey of my own as a seamstress. The idea resonated with me, and I eagerly accepted the offer. However, as time went on, it became evident that she was unable to impart the depth of knowledge she had initially promised.

Determined to turn my passion into a craft, I pressed on, seeking opportunities to refine my skills. It was in 2013 that fate introduced me to an extraordinary mentor, a generous soul who not only took me under her wing but also offered me her unwavering support and guidance. For nearly two years, I honed my tailoring expertise under her tutelage, and then, for the subsequent four years, I delved into a comprehensive internship program that she provided.

With the invaluable knowledge, experience, and inspiration I gained from my mentor, I embarked on the journey to create my own fashion brand. In July 2019, the dream became a reality, and Julybyoma was officially born.

This journey, marked by resilience, dedication, and the unwavering support of a mentor, has been the cornerstone of my fashion career. Today, as the proud owner of Julybyoma, I continue to channel my passion and creativity into every garment, striving to bring my clients the perfect expression of their unique style.

In the tapestry of my career as a professional fashion designer, there have been countless cherished moments, each one a testament to the artistry and precision that defines my craft. These moments are like gems in the grand mosaic of my journey, and among the most exhilarating are those instances when a creation I’ve meticulously crafted finds its perfect harmony with a client.

The thrill of these moments is unmatched, as I witness the delight in a client’s eyes when they wear one of my meticulously tailored outfits, and it fits them like a glove. It’s the culmination of not just measuring, cutting, and stitching, but the embodiment of their unique style and personality, expertly translated into fabric and form. These are the moments when fashion transcends mere clothing and becomes a manifestation of self-expression, enhancing the confidence and radiance of the wearer.

WHAT’S BEEN YOUR WORST MOMENTS AS A DESIGNER?

A prospective client reached out to me through the Instagram platform, ostensibly offering a job opportunity. What began as a dialogue around fashion soon descended into a nightmarish ordeal. The client, wielding a menacing firearm, not only relieved me of my cherished valuables but also stole my car.

This unsettling experience, a stark departure from the realm of creativity and elegance I’m accustomed to, serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictability of life’s paths. I eventually got my car back thanks to the meticulous intervention of the Nigerian police force.

My advice for start-ups/upcoming fashion designers, it is essential to maintain an open-minded approach, welcoming the prospect of meaningful collaborations. In this creative realm, it’s important to be prepared for the multitude of opinions and perspectives that will come your way.

Furthermore, it’s imperative to understand that the journey to success is often a gradual one, and initial blooms may not happen overnight. Patience and persistence are your steadfast allies on this path of artistic growth and evolution.
