In 2020, Nollywood star actress Beverly Naya released her award-winning documentary — Skin — which did a deep dive into colourism and identity, exploring the meaning of beauty in different “shades of black” exclusively on the streaming platform, Netflix.

Directed by Daniel Etim Effiong and set in present-day Nigeria, the documentary featured stars like PhynoEku EdeworHilda Dokubo, and Idris Okuneye (Bobrisky) amongst others.

It also featured a representative demographic of the society, from children, traders, and artists, to beauty entrepreneurs and sex workers who have dealt with the pressure to conform to certain standards of beauty, revealing how colourism has impacted the face of the entertainment industry and day-to-day life in Africa.

Now, Beverly is making this important body of knowledge available to the public for a greater cause. Taking to her Instagram to announce its availability on YouTube, she expressed what made Skin in the first place

This documentary set out to educate viewers on beauty’s true essence which is beyond the skin, spark conversations and celebrate black skin tones and how each hue empowers identity.
