It’s not easy to feel empowered especially when life does not seem to be going the way you want it to.

Do you ever feel that you’re powerless and have no control over your own life? That you are engulfed in those very human feelings of self-doubt and inadequacy? Or perhaps that you feel dominated by your peers or colleagues?

This sense of powerlessness can be immensely frustrating. But, no matter what personal challenges you face, you can always make choices that give you back control. Understanding this is the essence of self-empowerment.

In this article, we’ll be examining self-empowerment in more detail, and the techniques that you can use to achieve it.

What Is Self-Empowerment?

Self-empowerment means making a conscious decision to take charge of your destiny. It’s about knowing that you’re in charge of your own life and you have the strength and confidence you need to make decisions and changes. Self-empowered people understand their strengths and weaknesses and are motivated to learn and achieve.

What Makes You Empowered As a Woman?

One distinct characteristic that makes women feel empowered is their ability to feel inspired by the success stories of other women rather than despise their success or see them as a threat. Empowered women take every opportunity to grow and become better, even if it’s from those who are wiser and better than them in certain aspects.

They are all about their resilience, bravery, and strength to overcome anything that life throws at them. Empowered women are the definition of intelligent, resilient, courageous, and optimistic in every sense.

  1. Stop comparing yourself to others. Adopt a positive mindset.

It is important to prevent yourself from frequently falling into the ever-alluring yet emotionally-dangerous trap of comparing yourself to others rather you should strive to be the best possible versions that you can be.

While comparison can be a valuable source of motivation and growth, it can also spin us into a tail-chasing frenzy of self-doubt. We typically compare the worst we know of ourselves to the best we presume about others, and with that, there’s nothing to gain but much to lose: your pride, your dignity, your drive, and your passion are at stake.

Thinking positively through all situations gives you a sense of calm, a peace of mind, happiness, productivity and a full feeling of self-worth. There is nothing you cannot accomplish with a positive mindset.

  1. Follow your passion

We all have something that fuels us with life and purpose, something that motivates us to keep going forward in life that we’re passionate about.

Whether it’s art, academia, writing, tech, fashion, charity, animals, food, reading, etc you shouldn’t hesitate to follow your passion as it can make you feel empowered and self-discovery.

  1. Surround yourself with positive people

The people you spend time with can influence your thoughts and attitudes about yourself. If you surround yourself with negative or toxic people, you are very likely to absorb their negativity and this will make it difficult to feel empowered.

On the other hand, surrounding yourself with like-minded, motivated people can help you feel empowered to achieve your goals. Self-empowerment and a positive attitude go hand-in-hand.

  1. Practice positive self-talk

Our words create our emotions, and our emotions create our world. If we’re not feeling empowered, it’s a result of the stories we tell ourselves. Negative self-talk can limit your abilities and lessen your self-empowerment when you convince your subconscious that you “can’t handle” something or that it is “too hard” and you “shouldn’t even try.” The best way to tackle that is with positive affirmations.

By choosing words that are positive and encouraging, you are reprogramming your brain and feeding it positive affirmations about yourself which will help you on your quest to feeling empowered. For example, instead of saying “I can’t handle this” or “This is impossible,” try “I can do this” or “All I have to do is try.”

  1. Set realistic goals

Setting achievable goals is an important component of self-empowerment. If there’s one thing that people who have “made it” have in common, it’s that they knew exactly what they wanted to achieve out of life. They started small till they eventually made it, and that’s the way of an empowered individual.

Setting high-reaching goals and failing to achieve them has been found to damage confidence levels – big goals that may take years to achieve can also stunt your confidence growth. But by starting small and setting realistic goals, you are building your confidence and empowering yourself with each achievement.
