Who says age is a limitation to anything?? The fashion and entertainment industry might like to throw around the word “icon” quite a bit, but for Ms. Lauryn Hill, the title is more than fitting. Afterall, it’s been 20 years since her soulful, award-winning album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, was released (at least it will come August 25) and it’s still a huge source of inspiration. But Ms. Hill never reached a milestone that almost seems commonplace for every up-and-coming star today: She never starred in a fashion campaign but, At 43 years old……all that changed.
Just released this week, the singer is fronting Woolwich’s F/W 18 campaign—her first ever. And considering it’s been a long time coming to see the singer and songwriter in this light, no simple photo shoot will do. Styled by one of Rihanna’s go-to collaborators, Mel Ottenberg, the first “Woolrich: American Soul Since 1830″ campaign pays tribute to Ms. Hill and the solo album that changed her career, as the brand explains. Plus, as Ms. Hill is already a certified style star, she also worked to design custom pieces to wear in the shoot including jackets collaged with pictures of her and her Miseducation album art. Another meaningful throwback? The campaign was also photographed in Washington Heights where Ms. Hill’s “Doo Wop (That Thing)” video once took place.
Below take a look at all the campaign images that are at least 20 years in the making…
