Right now, all things African is hot. From our music to our movies and to our fashion, African things are on trend at the moment. Our fashion in particular has garnered attention on a global scale. WhoWhatWear writer Anna Laplaca wrote that there are 5 emerging fashion capitals different from the usual Big 4 New York, London, Paris and Milan. Anna included 2 African cities, Lagos and Johannesburg in her list.
These days you can find pieces from African female designers on international platforms such as Moda Operandi, Farfetch, Shopbop, and Revolve. We have created pieces that showcase our bright culture and heritage. The world has been in awe of said pieces and that fills my pride.
Here are 3 African women who have put African fashion on the map.
Andrea Iyamah:
Andrea is a Nigerian woman who started her label in 2011. Her pieces celebrate her African roots while her resort wear gives an effortless vibe to them. This yellow 2 piece set is chic and so pretty to see.
Lisa Folawiyo
Lisa Folawiyo makes pieces that are inspired by Lagos City. She shows off her Yoruba heritage in a way that is modern and fresh. More importantly, she uses local techniques like Adire in making her fabrics which are environmentally safe. This Adire dress is proof of that
Hanifa
Hanifa is a Congolese fashion brand that blew the international fashion scene in 2020 when she created the first 3D virtual fashion show in 2020. This Pink jumpsuit from 2020 collection is the epitome of style.
