The Kung Fu Panda 4 box office pushes the franchise past a rare milestone. Premiering in theaters on March 8, the fourth film in the animated franchise continues following Po who, while finding and training his successor as the Dragon Warrior, must defeat an evil sorceress called the Chameleon. Jack Black leads the Kung Fu Panda 4 cast once again alongside Dustin Hoffman, James Hong, Bryan Cranston, and Ian McShane, while Awkwafina, Ke Huy Quan, Ronny Chieng, and Viola Davis voice new characters.
Now, after less than two weeks in theaters, the Kung Fu Panda 4 box office has pushed the animated franchise past a rare milestone. According to Deadline, the franchise has passed the $2 billion mark globally. This also makes it the seventh-highest-grossing animated franchise of all time and DreamWorks Animation’s third series to pass the milestone, joining Shrek ($3.972B) and Madagascar ($2.257B).
Kung Fu Panda 4’s Box Office Success Explained
Next to Dune: Part Two, Kung Fu Panda 4 has been the second highest-grossing film of 2024 so far. However, with its $58 million opening weekend, the animated film was able to top the box office and overthrow the sci-fi epic, which earned $46 million in its second weekend. Kung Fu Panda 4 made $30 million in its second weekend, remaining in first place. It’s currently sitting at $179 million globally, which breaks down to $109 million domestically and $69 million internationally.
This box office success is despite the Kung Fu Panda 4 reviews, which have been generally positive, but the weakest the series has seen, resulting in a franchise-low Rotten Tomatoes score of 72%. While the reviews suggest that the franchise is running out of steam, this isn’t the case at the box office, as Kung Fu Panda 4 posted the franchise’s best opening in 16 years and has already passed half the original movie’s total domestic gross. Passing the $2 billion mark globally is just the latest sign that the franchise is not only surviving, but flourishing.
