EM- PLEASE TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND BRAND
I am Cecilia May Agu, a certified marriage counsellor, relationship coach, sexologist and founder of Bedroom Matters. Bedroom Matters is a relationship, marriage and sex coaching brand that focuses on helping couples use physical intimacy and pleasure to build formidable relationships.
EM- HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THIS FIELD?
I have been in this field for almost a decade.
EM- WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GO INTO MARRIAGE COUNSELING?
Marriage Counselling found me. I was natural at helping people navigate tough decisions or situations in their relationships. When I got married and had challenges, the tools I and my husband used to strengthen our marriage were what I used to help friends and acquaintances navigate theirs. The spectacular results propelled me to do more for people. Along the way, I had to gain professional knowledge through various certifications. The rest, they say, is history.
EM- TIPS ON HOW YOU STARTED?
I started because I had a natural/God-given gift of helping people around me navigate the challenges of their relationships. As this aspect of myself became more business viable, I monetized my knowledge, used social media to share valuable content, show up consistently, and gained the necessary certifications to give better advice. Other things I did when I got started were to get a mentor, identify my target audience, and collaborate with other professionals in the field.
EM- BEING A LADY, PARTICULARLY A CHRISTIAN AND VENTURING INTO CLINICAL SEXOLOGY, DID YOU FACE ANY CHALLENGES OR DISCRIMINATION?
I faced a lot of challenges from a few family and friends, and mostly from the christian folks. I got nasty comments, my social media pages were reported multiple times and brought down, some said I was leading people astray etc. Some people wouldn’t associate with me then. But all that has changed now. There are still a few objections, but it’s nothing compared to what it was years ago.
EM- HOW WERE YOU ABLE TO OVERCOME THOSE CHALLENGES?
I was clear on my God-given assignment to restore passion and physical intimacy into marriages, so it helped to know I was doing a serious job. Then, I had a support system in my King, Amanna Agu. He kept telling me, “The devil will not be happy with you because you’re helping keep the marriage bed undefiled, but I’m here with you always, and I have your back”. Prayers helped a great deal when the challenges were tough. I have mentors who only want to see me do great, the best family and tribe members.
EM- HOW WERE YOU ABLE TO OVERCOME YOUR TRAUMATIC RAPE EXPERIENCE?
Through God, therapy and having an understanding spouse who helped overcome the trauma. God came through for me in those painful seasons, I won completely by the absolute power of God during a service in my home church when a visiting minister God used to help me break free from the stronghold of that multiple rape trauma that almost ruined my marriage. My amazing husband was also patient with me in the early years of our marriage. He went to my therapy sessions with me.
EM- YOU SPOKE ABOUT OVERCOMING A MARRIAGE CHALLENGE, WHAT CHALLENGE DID YOU FACE?
One major challenge I faced in my marriage, aside from the sexual part, was expecting my husband to be exactly like me. I expected him to communicate better, remember birthdays and anniversaries, and hustle like me. But those expectations were unrealistic. I needed to understand how men and women operate, communicate and function. Now we are better. I can honestly say I married right, and my king loves me.
EM- WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR WOMEN EXPERIENCING MARITAL CHALLENGES OR STRUGGLING WITH A TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCE?
Firstly, what is their goal for their lives and marriage? The answers to this question will help in solving the problem. They need to understand that God is the creator of the marriage institution, and they need to trust Him completely. Effective communication is vital, as research has shown that many married couples fail to communicate with each other. It is necessary to seek professional help. Speak to a seasoned marriage counsellor. There’s no shame in that. Finally, for time and space, become an irresistible Queen: set boundaries, respect and honour your king, look after yourself (rest, have fun, look good and feel great, and take yourself out.
