The 2024 BET Awards nominations are here, and it’s a banner year for Nigerian artists! Leading the pack is rising star Ayra Starr, who snagged an impressive three nods. She’s in the running for Best New Artist, Best International Act, and the BET Her award for her infectious hit “Commas.” In the BET Her category, she’ll go head-to-head with industry heavyweights like Beyoncé, Megan Thee Stallion, and Nicki Minaj.
Tems also boasts a strong showing with two nominations. She’s recognized for directing the music video for her song “Me & U” in the Video Director of the Year category. The track itself, produced by GuiltyBeatz, is also nominated for the Dr. Bobby Jones Best Gospel/Inspirational Award.
Afrobeats giant Burna Boy continues to dominate, earning nominations in both the Best Male R&B/Pop Artist and Best Male Hip-Hop Artist categories. Here, he’ll face off against established stars like Chris Brown, Drake, and Usher.
The “Viewer’s Choice: Best New International Act” category sees Seyi Vibez enter the race, while Asake joins the fight for Best International Act alongside fellow African artists like Tyla, Aya Nakamura, and Focalistic.
Speaking of Chris Brown, his Afrobeats-infused collaboration with Nigerian superstars Davido and Lojay, “Sensational,” is also a contender in the Viewer’s Choice Award category.
South African powerhouse Tyla, a Grammy Award winner herself, secured a remarkable four nominations, including Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, Best New Artist, Viewer’s Choice Award, and Best International Act.
Beyond music, the 2024 BET Awards showcase Black excellence on the big screen as well. Nigerian-American actress Ayo Edebiri is nominated for Best Actress alongside veterans like Angela Bassett and Issa Rae. Damson Idris, a Nigerian-British actor, is recognized for his work in the Best Actor category.
The 2024 BET Awards, themed “Standing on Culture,” will air live from Los Angeles on BET on Sunday, June 30th at 8 pm ET/PT. Don’t forget to cast your vote for the Viewer’s Choice Award starting June 6th!
