How well do you really know your hair?

Many of us care for it every day, but rarely stop to think about what it truly needs to thrive. It’s a typical routine: wash, style, repeat, without thinking much about what’s happening beneath the surface.

As the founder of Nerolie Nature Botanica, Judith Chinyere Emmanuel approaches hair wellness with precision and care. She combines clinical expertise with holistic practices to understand the scalp, the follicles, and how the body impacts healthy hair growth. For her, true hair care isn’t just about products, it’s about creating routines and solutions that work from the root up.

Here, she shares her journey, insights, and practical advice for anyone navigating the often-confusing world of hair and scalp health:

What first drew you to hair care, and how did that interest evolve into a career?

My journey into hair care didn’t start as a career plan, it came from a very personal place. Back in 2012, I was working in facility management while doing makeup on the side, mostly for brides. At the time, I struggled with severe acne and wasn’t confident about my skin or hair.

A turning point came when I lost a bridal client because of my skin. It was a difficult moment, but it pushed me to start looking for solutions. I began experimenting with natural ingredients at home, trying to find something that would actually work. When I realised the results were only temporary, I decided to learn properly.

That led me to the School of Natural Skincare in Bristol, London, where I took an online course and later completed a full diploma covering both skincare and hair care. I started formulating products for myself, and when I saw real improvements in my skin and hair, it encouraged me to keep going.

A while later, a colleague noticed the changes and asked me to create products for her daughter. When those worked too, I began to seriously consider turning it into a career.

Over time, I realised my hair care formulations were delivering more consistent results, especially in reducing shedding and improving hair health. As more people approached me with hair loss concerns, I knew I needed deeper expertise. That led me to pursue certification in trichology through the National Institute for Health and Wellness, under the tutorship of VCare clinics in India. That’s how I started making products for clients.

What was the vision behind founding Nerolie Nature Botanica?

The name itself came from “neroli”, an essential oil derived from orange blossoms. It was the first essential oil I used in my formulations that truly worked for me. Orange has always been my favourite colour, and the idea of a blossom felt symbolic of growth and transformation, which mirrored my own experience. I added an “e” to make it uniquely mine, and that’s how Nerolie was born.

“Nature Botanica” reflects the foundation I started from; natural, organic and holistic ingredients. Even though I now incorporate cosmeceutical and pharmaceutical ingredients where necessary, that holistic base is still at the heart of everything I do.

As the brand began to take shape, I knew I didn’t want to be everything to everyone. I wanted to focus on a niche where I could truly make an impact. Initially, I explored both skincare and hair care, but over time, it became clear that hair care, particularly hair loss and scalp disorders was where my work was most effective and most needed. So I decided to build the brand around that space.

You’ve been formulating since 2012. How has your approach to hair and scalp care changed over the years?

Over the years, my approach has evolved from simply formulating products to truly understanding the root of hair and scalp issues. Working with different clients facing various forms of hair loss and scalp disorders made me realise that it wasn’t just about what you apply externally.

I wanted to better understand what could be happening internally, whether it’s hormonal imbalances, lifestyle factors, or underlying health conditions, and how that connects to hair and scalp health.

By combining trichology with functional medicine, I’m able to address not just the symptoms, but the root causes, and ultimately provide more lasting relief for my clients.

At what point did you realise that many hair concerns are often more about the scalp than just the hair itself?

I began to really understand this during consultations with clients who were doing “all the right things” with hair products but still experiencing hair loss or ongoing scalp issues.

Using a trichoscope to examine the scalp more closely, I started seeing things like inflammation, congestion, poor blood circulation, and in some cases, inactive or damaged follicles. Those findings completely changed how I approached treatment. Instead of focusing only on the hair itself, I began prioritising scalp health because that’s where real, lasting results begin.

Many people struggle with hair loss in silence. What are some of the most common myths about hair loss you’ve encountered?

One thing I’ve noticed is that many people assume that dandruff automatically means their scalp is dry, so they keep applying oils. In reality, a lot of these cases are linked to an oily scalp, and adding more oil can actually feed the underlying fungal activity and make the condition worse.

Another misconception is that if there’s no pain, then nothing is wrong. But inflammation doesn’t always present with discomfort; someone can have significant scalp inflammation without feeling it, depending on the condition they’re dealing with.

There’s also the belief that oils alone can solve hair growth issues. While certain oils can be beneficial, they don’t address underlying scalp conditions. If the scalp isn’t healthy, the oil simply sits on the surface without delivering real results.

And then there’s the idea that cutting the hair will fix the problem. But hair outside the scalp is already a dead structure, the real issue lies within the follicle and the scalp environment. For healthy growth to happen, the focus has to be on restoring proper scalp conditions.

Through your work, what patterns have you noticed about the root causes of hair and scalp issues?

One of the most common patterns I notice is nutrient deficiency. When the body lacks the right vitamins and minerals, it directly affects the strength and function of the hair follicles, often leading to thinning or shedding.

I’ve also seen cases linked to autoimmune conditions, where the body essentially attacks its own hair follicles, disrupting the natural growth cycle. Beyond that, lifestyle factors play a huge role. Sleep deprivation, for example, interferes with the body’s ability to repair and regulate itself, which in turn affects hair growth.

Stress is another major trigger. It can drive inflammation in the body, and that inflammation often shows up through increased hair shedding or scalp issues. And then there’s hydration, something many people overlook. Poor hydration can affect blood circulation and oxygen flow to the scalp, which are both essential for healthy follicle activity.

What all of this points to is a bigger picture: healthy hair is a reflection of overall wellbeing. Once you begin to address those internal factors, you start to see more lasting improvements.

For someone dealing with persistent hair loss, what is the first step you usually recommend before turning to treatments or products?

I always advise starting from within before turning to treatments or products. If the hair loss is recurring, worsening, or simply not improving over time, it’s often a sign that something deeper is going on in the body.

The first step I recommend is running the right blood tests. This helps us identify any underlying issues. Once we have that clarity, it becomes much easier to approach treatment in a way that is targeted and effective, rather than just guessing or relying solely on external products.

For someone just beginning their hair wellness journey, what foundational habits or routines would you recommend for maintaining a healthy scalp over time?

For anyone starting their hair wellness journey, I always say the foundation begins from within. A balanced diet is key; one that includes proteins, vegetables, and carbohydrates, but with a strong focus on protein, since that’s what supports keratin production for healthy hair growth.

Lifestyle also plays a major role. Getting enough sleep, managing stress as much as possible, and staying active, even if it’s just regular movement, can significantly improve blood circulation and support overall cell function, which directly impacts hair health. Hydration is just as important, because it helps maintain proper blood flow and nourishment to the scalp.

On the external side, consistency with scalp care matters. I recommend washing the scalp regularly, ideally every two to four weeks, to prevent product buildup that can clog follicles and disrupt healthy growth. It’s also important to pay attention to how your scalp responds to products. If something causes itching or discomfort, it’s a sign that it may not be right for you.

Moisture is another key factor. Using water-based serums or products can help maintain a healthy moisture balance on the scalp, which in turn reduces excessive oil production and helps prevent flaking.

At the end of the day, it’s about understanding your scalp and creating a routine that works for it.

At the heart of Judith’s work is a simple but often overlooked truth: hair health is never just about hair. It is about the scalp, the body, and the everyday habits that shape both.

Through her journey, from personal trial and error to clinical training and years of working with clients, she has built an approach that works and guarantees long-term results.

She’s the expert, you should listen…
