Lagos makes history as the E1 Grand Prix delivers speed, innovation, and sustainability on African waters. The city of Lagos is synonymous with vibration, creativity and innovation. Beneath the hustle and bustle lies a large mass of water, covering about 22% of Lagos state’s landscape.

History was made as Team Brazil emerged as the winner at the first ever E1 GrandPrix powerboat race in Lagos.

The E1 Lagos GP wasn’t a regular sporting event; it was the first all-electric powerboat race in Africa and the first time the international E1 Series was held on the continent.

Sleek RaceBirds, electric hydrofoil boats built for zero-emission performance, swept across the lagoon during two days of fast-paced racing, enthralling bystanders with their quiet strength and accuracy.

Led by Timmy Hansen and Ieva Millere-Hagin, Team Brazil earned their position at the top by navigating through group races and finals.

Attending the marathon, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu praised it as “a defining moment for Lagos and the African continent.” He underlined that Lagos’s willingness to take the lead in innovation, sustainability, and the blue economy is demonstrated by the E1 Lagos GP.

Highlighting his administration’s dedication to making Lagos Africa’s center of marine innovation, Sanwo-Olu stated, “This event proves that Lagos is more than a megacity — it’s a hub for technology, creativity, and sustainable growth.”

According to the Lagos State Government, the event could bring in up to $100 million in revenue from travel, lodging, and international collaborations, enhancing the city’s standing as a major hub for innovation and sports worldwide.

A large network of waterways, including lagoons and creeks, which comprise around 22% of Lagos State’s total territory, lies beneath the bustle. It’s only fitting that Lagos is celebrated not just for its vibrant road network and architectural prowess, but also for its spontaneous innovation in the marine sector.

By combining the excitement of racing with a powerful environmental message, the E1 Lagos GP transformed these waterways into a global platform, demonstrating that motorsport can be both swift and sustainable in the future.

The success of the event can be attributed to solid partnerships. As the primary sponsor, FirstBank was joined by Guinness, Tolaram Group, Spiro, and Oando. Collectively, they demonstrated the effectiveness of cooperation between industry, government, and creativity.

For the eyewitnesses, the event was more than just racing; it was a blend of Lagos energy, culture, and technology. Live music, local art exhibits, and waterfront viewing areas were all part of the weekend’s celebration of African pride and global advancement.
