PARIS, May 22 (Reuters) — Nicolas Ghesquière, the creative force behind Louis Vuitton’s womenswear, presented the brand’s Cruise 2026 collection on Thursday evening in the grand courtyard of the Palais des Papes, a dramatic medieval structure in the south of France.

The runway show featured a star-studded front row, including French First Lady Brigitte Macron, screen legends Catherine Deneuve and Cate Blanchett, and Louis Vuitton’s menswear designer, Pharrell Williams. Guests watched from tiered seating flanking the catwalk as the show began just after sunset.

Models emerged in a striking lineup of outfits: shimmering metallic blazers, flowing capes with fiery motifs, and gladiator boots encrusted with mirrored glass. Several ensembles incorporated pleats and cascading chains, adding dynamic texture and movement, while other looks embraced a softer, bohemian aesthetic with layered skirts and billowy, wide-sleeved blouses.

This showcase from the LVMH-owned fashion giant — currently the world’s largest luxury brand — comes amid a challenging period for the high-end fashion industry, which has seen a slowdown in demand. In response, several major houses including Gucci and Balenciaga (owned by Kering), as well as Chanel and Dior (the latter also under LVMH), have recently appointed new creative leads.

In contrast, Ghesquière’s position remains secure. Having held the role since 2013, he reaffirmed his commitment to Louis Vuitton with a contract extension signed in late 2023, ensuring his continued influence on the brand’s vision for years to come.
