Washing hairAre you washing your hair the right way? Using the right techniques can improve your hair’s health, bounce and shine but doing otherwise can cause damage to hair strands. The way and manner with which you wash your hair is relatively the same as the next lady. But when it comes to the choice of products and frequency of washing, then it varies depending on hair texture, colour etc.

  • For normal to fine hair types, wash at least 3 times a week.
  • For the oily type, wash at least once a day.
  • When picking out products, got for products that are tailor-made to suit your particular hair texture and colour too.

Washing Your Hair the Right Way

Step 1. Rinse out first: You should wet your hair thoroughly before applying shampoo. Hot to warm water can be used as it opens the cuticles which is good for removing dirt trapped in the scalp.

Step 2. Condition it first (if you have long hair): if your hair falls beneath your shoulders, protect fragile ends from drying out by applying a small amount of conditioner to the ends and rinsing it out lightly before any shampooing is done.

Step 3. Shampoo: The best way to lather up is from roots to end. The hair closest to the scalp is the youngest and will be the oiliest, while the end bit is the oldest and the driest part.

Step 4. Wash gently: Friction can permanently damage the hair’s cuticle leading to breakage and frizz. Start your shampooing at the roots using vertical strokes with medium pressure. This increases blood flow and stimulates growth. Circular motions can cause tangling.

Step 5. Don’t wash twice; Despite the instruction on the shampoo bottle, there is no need to wash your hair twice. One wash is usually sufficient unless it is really dirty and did not produce enough lather the first time.

Step 6. Condition: After you have rinsed out the shampoo, squeeze some of the water out of the hair before you put in the conditioner. The longer the conditioner stays on, the better it is absorbed. Don’t put conditioner at the roots of your hair; the natural oil from your scalp is more concentrated there. Instead, add conditioner from the mid-lengths to the tips.

Step 7. Rinse out with cold water: Cold water will shut the cuticles tight, sealing the shingle like outer layer, which will cause it to reflect the most light and give off the most shine.
